Biography

James Tseung is a Hong Kong Composer, multi-instrumentalist, and arranger currently based in Vancouver, Canada.  Inspired by Khalil Fong and the Beatles, Tseung taught himself to play guitar and relearn piano, eventually began his song-writing journey at the age of 14.  Around the same time, his interest in jazz also started growing, which led him to participate in some local jam sessions in Hong Kong.  With the inspirations gained from jazz, Tseung started adding jazz elements into his music, and dipping his toe into instrumental music.

After graduating from secondary school, Tseung went to Canada to study music.  He has also started composing soundtracks for Alan Ho’s films.  Since 2020, he has been releasing his music on major streaming platforms.

Through studying in a traditional music program, Tseung has gained more opportunities to do score-based composition, and have different ensembles to perform his pieces.   All these experiences have helped him to expand his musical palette, and shaping his own iconic sound as a composer.

As a multi-disciplinary musician, Tseung is also actively engaged in performing activities. Over the years, he has been played in concert band, jazz combo, musical theatre, and worship band, as a drummer/percussionist, occasionally keyboardist.

Tseung was invited to compose and arranging some tunes and hymns for the 50 foot tall bell tower at university in early 2022.  Recordings of his composition played by the tower are incorporated into his album Vagabond. In 2023, he got the opportunity to conduct the university orchestra to perform his orchestral piece, Theme of 1A.

In 2024, Tseung did his first two performances as a singer-songwriter in Taiwan Festival and Jade Music Festival.
