Pieces

Music composed for different ensembles and instruments.

A composition inspired by Vincent Persichetti’s 20th Century Harmony. I was asked to write original melodies using original scales, so I made up several scales and decided to settle on this one scale: E F G# A# B C# D E.  After that I orchestrated the piece using synths and virtual instruments.

While the composer and his friend hopped on 1A (the bus that he used to take quite often before his family relocated) at one summer night in Hong Kong for a nostalgic ride, he reminisces on all the changes that has happened in the past couple years in his life, his city, and in his world. These episodes of memories show the journey of how a young innocent boy has grown in the midst of social unrest.

Composed for the film 20.18GB by Alan Ho in a funeral scene.

The piece starts with an arpeggio-like motif on D and G major 7th chords.  It is a metaphor of lives growing out from the earth again in spring time after a tough winter and also celebrating the ending of lockdown in Canada. Meanwhile, several parts of the world are still suffering, like a forest fire. The middle section goes to B minor, portraying a huge rainfall that would extinguish the fire in other forests. With all these in mind, there are still uncertainty and ambiguity in the world, with the piece ends on an unresolved chord. This piece is a celebration of freedom, but also a remembrance of those who are still suffering, and a wish of peace.
